The Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival began in 1996 and has grown into one of the largest festivals in the Atlantic region. The festival takes place the 3rd week of September each year.
As a joint effort of the PEI Aquaculture Alliance and the PEI Shellfish Association, the festival is best described as a "great big kitchen party", appealing to a very broad base of visitors and Islanders, with activities and entertainment to suit all ages.
Great musical acts continue to wow the audience, with first class Maritime entertainers. Last year: East Coast Music Award Winner Richard Wood, Boys in the Kitchen, Lazy Jacks, Boys Next Door and Jug in Hand appeared at the festival.
While lively music is an important ingredient, every successful Island Kitchen Party also needs great food. This year, festival-goers will not be disappointed as they try scrumptious seafood chowder, freshly steamed world-class PEI Blue Mussels and mouth-watering quality Malpeque Oysters that are served daily in the festival tent.
There is sure to be something for everyone at this year's PEI International Shellfish Festival. From gourmet chefs to home cooks; first time oyster tasters to world-class oyster shuckers, the festival should prove to be both entertaining and educational for people of all ages.
