The Macphail Homestead was the home of one of P.E.I.'s most famous writers, physicians, and scholars, Sir Andrew Macphail. His father, William M(a)cphail was a schoolmaster, born in Nairn, Inverness, Scotland in 1830. The 2 year old William and his parents William Macphail and Mary MacPherson departed Fort William, Scotland in 1832, and after a shipwreck, settled in River John, Cape Breton. In 1844, they came to P.E.I. William, at 28 years of age, married Catherine Moore Smith on Newton, PEI. By this time William was himself a Schoolmaster, and to move closer to his work they bought then bought the 100 acre Fletcher farm in Orwell, and moved in on May 24th, 1864.
